"Agroforestry with chestnut is a traditional practice in northwest Spain, but chestnut blight threatens these trees. The CASTANEA operational group seeks biological control strategies, especially in Extremadura. The method involves identifying Vegetative Compatibility Groups and mating types present, exploring hypovirulence as a control approach. The protocol includes selecting hypovirulent strains compatible with local VCGs, confirmed by molecular analyses, and producing inoculants. Research highlights the need to monitor the effectiveness of biological control and the genetic diversity of affected areas. Results show the predominance of certain VCGs in certain regions, with hypovirulent strains identified and experimental treatments initiated. Preserving chestnut plantations and reducing disease damage are central objectives, requiring continuous investigation and implementation of protective measures
