Manual of recommendations for an efficient use of water in chestnut groves

The study highlighted the sensitivity of chestnut trees to water scarcity in the summer; particularly in new plantations in the Extremadura region; Spain; where water supply is limited and irregular. In response to this challenge; the CASTANEA operational group focused on implementing techniques to mitigate water stress in chestnut trees. The results indicated that to maintain chestnut production and quality; it is essential to maintain good water status during critical growth and fruiting periods. Key recommendations include subsoiling the soil before planting to improve water retention capacity; using localized irrigation systems; drip irrigation; or micro-sprinklers; and regularly monitoring the water status of the trees. Additionally; it is vital to implement appropriate irrigation scheduling; avoid overwatering; and apply prolonged irrigation at the beginning of the growth cycle; especially after dry periods. These measures aim to optimize water use and ensure the health and productivity of chestnut trees; particularly in the face of climate change

    NANOCELLULOSE MEMBRANES FOR NUTRIENT RECOVERY

    Document

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Grant Agreement No 858735This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Grant Agreement No 858735. FACTSHEET NANOCELLULOSE MEMBRANES FOR NUTRIENT RECOVERY Key information Functionalized nanocellulose membranes can take up nitrate and phosphate. These membranes can be put in a water treatment unit. As the membranes are biobased, degradable materials, they can after use be added to the soil, thus returning the leached nutrients back for their original purpose providing fertilizers (nutrient recycling).

Club GREY HORSE – Providing multiple ecosystems services by forest renters

    Document

This case study is drafting new legislation that allows renting forestland for multiple purposes in order to increase economic efficiency and maintain a balance between all ecosystem services. This Russian case works on regulation mechanisms so that people renting forestland can use it for multiple purposes, and to include ecosystem services in the Forest Code.
